Many people don’t realize it but your abdominal muscles are actually just one big sheet of muscle. We refer to certain areas but they all work as one single unit. So, when you’re working on your abs you are indeed working the entire area but it can be difficult to tone the lower section. There are some great workouts to help remedy this, though.
1. Lower Leg Raise – For this exercise all you have to do is stabilize yourself on a solid surface and start bringing your knees toward your midsection. Be sure to squeeze in hard to really burn the muscle in the lower portion of your abdominals.
2. Alternating Leg Raise – This exercise is identical to the one above but instead of bringing both legs toward your torso at the same time you alternate bringing your left up, then your right, then your left again and so on and so forth. This is great for getting those really hard to reach spots on your abs to give full tonality and definition.
3. Cross Crunches – This is done by laying in a standard crunch position but instead of just doing a straight forward crunch you are going to cross, twisting your body with your left arm toward your right knee and then your right arm to your left knee. During this exercise you need to keep your abs tight and try to tuck your pelvis in. Instructors explain this as holding as if you were trying to stop yourself from urinating.
Combine all three of these exercises into one specific ab workout routine. You can do this just 20 minutes per day and get noticeable results in just a few weeks. Remember that one of most important steps in developing your abs is consistency. Make sure you do this routine 3 to 4 times a week at least to ensure your abs are getting toned and stay toned.
