Abs Workout for Weight Loss & Definition
There are several exercises that work to not only get rid of stomach fat but also develop your core. Crunches work… to an extent, but to achieve the best results possible you’re going to need to perform a plethora of exercises in a concise routine. Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than it sounds and the results alone will warrant it. Here are some of the best ones to add to your routine..
1. Bicycle Crunches
As the name implies, this is a form of a crunch. We know we know, we said crunches will get you only so far.. but that isn’t true for advanced ones. This type of crunch involves putting your arms behind your head and bringing both your elbows and knees up to meet. This is accomplished by slightly twisting your core to touch your elbow to the knee on the opposite side. So, if you are bringing your right elbow up you would touch your left knee cap with it. And you alternate back and forth.
This exercise is highly effective because you’re putting both your abs and obliques to use which helps to develop better tone. It is also very useful for getting rid of stomach fat. For these you’ll want to do 3 or more sets of 15 reps.
Planks an incredible exercise that tone both your abdominal and back muscles in one simple move. This exercise is executed in a way similar to a push-up but requires endurance and stability. Face the floor and lie down resting yourself on your forearms with the palm side of your hands flat on the floor. Raise yourself up keeping your back flat and in a straight line with your heels. Use your core to stabilize yourself and make sure that your buttocks doesn’t raise above or drag below the straight line of your back.
For best results be sure to hold this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute (depending on what you’re capable of) and lowering yourself. Do a set of 5 reps of planks during your routine. Reference the image below to understand the correct form you should be in to execute this exercise.
3. Vertical Leg Crunches
Another variation of the crunch that works exceptionally well for melting fat and developing your core muscles is the vertical leg crunch. This exercise is performed exactly the same way a traditional crunch is with the exception that you will need to have both of your legs raised during it. The easiest way to do this is to position yourself in a standard crunch form, raise both legs and cross them at the ankles. Doing so forces you to use your abdominal muscles more than a regular crunch. This exercise works wonders for your lower abs and obliques and even helps you develop better stability.
For the best results it’s best to do 3 to 5 sets of about 15 reps of this exercise. If you are unable to do that many, decrease to either 2 or 1 sets and work your way up over the course of a few weeks. You’ll notice significant differences in your stomach as well as your back after a few months of performing these.
